UPDATE 3: My issues have been resolved, and they were do to having corrupt video files. It's worth noting that I have not done extensive testing, and things may end up working out better than my initial impressions. They are surprised by my findings and have offered to help figure out the situation. UPDATE 2: I've been contacted by a rep from Plex. Using Twonky/Infuse and my home WiFi, I was able to get multiple streams, no connection issues, MKV playback as well as H.265. For a variety of reasons, turning off my home WiFi isn't practical, but I'll be testing that soon. UPDATE: I'm finding better results with using Twonky/Infuse on my home WiFi. I first, set things up where I did have connection to the Internet via WiFi (and I have a Plex Pass, although I'm not sure that matters). I wouldn't be surprised if there are other options for streaming addition formats or other functionality that make this device worth keeping for things I hadn't planned on.Īnyway, if anyone has any questions as it pertain to iOS devices, please let me know and I'll try to test and answer before either returning this devices (likely) or leaving on my trip with it.ĮDIT: I should have mentioned that the remote location where I was had no connectivity. To give it a fair review on the product as opposed to just the Plex feature, I need to spend more time.

Some of this could be blamed on early version firmware and apps, but the WiFi throughput issue frightens me.Īdditionally, this drive is chock full o' features. However, when I go through the WD My Cloud app itself, and open one of the movies, it seems to play fine (although I have not thoroughly tested this). I couldn't find any of my movies that played without stuttering through Plex. I tested this in a remote area far from any other WiFi and with the Passport within a couple of feet of my iPhone 6S+ and iPad Pro with no other electronics or devices in the area.

I had problems streaming h.264 MP4 files that were 4.75 mbps (movies with the same exact encoding as those from the iTunes Movie Store). The biggest complaint though is the throughput. I also hadn't realized how much of my library isn't native (I've encoded a lot of h.265). I knew it couldn't transcode, and that video had to be in a format that was native for iOS, but when I went to transfer my library, that turned out to be far more restrictive than I had planned. I might change my opinion with updates, but for now, I'm not impressed. I have a few days, and I may end up returning it. I'm going to be traveling for quite a while and hoped to bring this with me. Painfully slow, but I'm comparing it to my Mac mini (which I can't even tell when it's transcoding h.265 files). No, it doesn't play MKV files (not even h.264). I just received the WD 3TB My Passport Wireless Pro, and have set it up as a mobile Plex Media server for use with my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
